Runoff from heavy rain more than 10 inches

FORT HOOD, Texas — Heavy rains are expected to reach as much as 10 inches in the next three days.

Runoff from heavy rain will flood creeks, streams, street intersections, culverts and underpasses. Low lying places that normally flood could become death traps.

Residents traveling in the areas surrounding the Fort Hood range should not not cross any flood area.

“Turn around don`t drown” is the catch phrase being used by senior officials at Fort Hood. Travelers should not drive where water covers the road, officials warned.

Even SUVs and pickup trucks will be swept away by as little as two feet of rushing water, officials continued.

INCLEMENT WEATHER NOTE

  • Only get behind the wheel if it’s absolutely essential. Seek high ground. Do not cross flooded roadways.  Turn around, don’t drown!
  • Obey warning signs, barricades and road closures.
  • Follow the directions of law enforcement personnel.
  • Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded. Roads may have weakened and could collapse under the weight of a car.
  • Always stay away from downed power lines.  Report them immediately.

INCLEMENT WEATHER NOTES: Especially for Children

  • Teach children safety tips.
  • Keep children away from water.
  • Do not allow them to play in or near drainage canals or streams.
  • Water moves deceptively fast during flash flood conditions!
