FORT HOOD, Texas — III Corps and Fort Hood’s Equal Opportunity Office along with 1st Air Cavalry Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will pay homage to the victims of the Holocaust in a “Days of Remembrance” observance at 1:30 p.m. April 11 in the Phantom Warrior Center here. The guest speaker for the event will be Holocaust survivor Max Glauben.

Max Glauben was born in 1928 in Warsaw, Poland. In 1939, Max and his family were placed in the Warsaw Ghetto until the uprising of the Ghetto in 1943.

After the uprising, Max and his family were moved to the Madjanek Gas Chambers. There, Max was separated from his mother, brother and the rest of his family where they would parish. However, Max and his father were selected to work as slave labor at the Bduzyn Concentration Camp. His father was killed three weeks later after their transfer. Max was then sent to the Mielec, Wieliczka, and Flossenburg Concentration Camps.

On April 23, 1945, Max was part of the Dachau Death March when the U.S. Army liberated Max and his fellow prisoners. In 1947, at the age of 19, Max came to New York then later moved the Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1951, Max would be drafted into the U.S. Army. He later attended basic training here where he would serve his two years of service during the Korean War.

In 1953, Max received his Honorable Discharge form the U.S. Army and moved to Dallas, Texas. There he would meet his wife Frieda Gappelburg.

Max then worked for Neiman-Marcus and Southwest toys until he joined as a partner in Imperial Garment Supply and National Embroidery, INC. Max retired at the age of 75.

Max then became one of the founders of the Congregation Beth Israel in Mesquite, Texas, where he served as a Board of Trustees.

Max is a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Associate of the Dallas Chapter of Hadassah and a lifetime member of the Board of Directors for the Dallas Holocaust Museum. Max currently lectures on the Holocaust at schools, churches, colleges and various other organizations and Institutes.
