HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — Fort Hood and neighboring communities Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Nolanville, Belton, Salado, Gatesville, and Lampasas making up the Cen-Tex Sustainable Communities Partnership will gather from 3-4 p.m. April 14 at Carl Levin Park, 400 Millers Crossing, Harker Heights, to sign a proclamation recognizing April as Sustainable Environment Month.

The ceremony will also include a seed spreading event at the park’s pocket prairie with the Fort Hood garrison commander and city mayors also recognizing an individual or organization from each partner community with the 2022 Cen-Tex Sustainable Communities Partnership Environmental Ambassador Award.

Awardees include community members, staff, and youth for their efforts in fostering community service and promoting beautification, conservation, pollution prevention, and recycling through youth and community initiatives. The following individuals from their respective communities will be recognized:

  • City of Belton: Manuel Zapata
  • City of Killeen: Yalondra Valderrama-Santana
  • City of Copperas Cove: Nathan Garner
  • City of Lampasas: Lampasas Community Garden
  • Fort Hood: MAJ Kandice Hines
  • City of Nolanville: Colleen Smith-Fey & Marlene Fey
  • City of Gatesville: Joe Campbell
  • Village of Salado: Colleen Brooks
  • City of Harker Heights: Angie Wilson

Mayor Spencer H. Smith, City of Harker Heights, will gift each community a native wildflower seed mix and to represent the collaborative partnership in promoting beautification and sustainability within the region.
