MEDIA ADVISORY: Division West's 479th Field Artillery Brigade gets new commander

FORT HOOD, Texas - The 479th Field Artillery Brigade will receive a new commander during a change of command ceremony scheduled for 9 a.m., July 16, at Cameron Field near Division West, Building 410.

Col. John Leffers will replace Col. Richard D. Creed, who has commanded the 479th since June 2011. Creed will move on to become the chief of the Commander's Planning Group at Training and Doctrine Command Headquarters at Fort Eustis, Va.

Leffer’s last assignment was as a student at the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa.

Visitors may obtain a one-day special event pass and directions to Cameron Field at the Marvin Leath Visitors Center on T.J. Mills Boulevard.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony and reception will be held at Company A, 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment Hangar, Building 7027, Murphy Road, Fort Hood, Texas.

While under Creed’s command, the 479th has provided post-mobilization to over 17,425 Soldiers from 164 units from the United States Army Reserve and Army National Guard. The Brigade's nine Training Support Battalions specialize in tasks including Counter Improvised Explosive Device, Force Protection, Mounted Gunnery, Convoy Live Fire Exercise, Liaison Officer Operations, Combatives training, Counterinsurgency Language and Culture, Urban and Mountainous Operations, Small Arms, Drivers Training and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle familiarization, High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Egress Assistance training, Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Egress training, and Medical Cumulative training exercises.

Media representatives interested in attending the change of command ceremony should arrive at the Fort Hood Marvin Leath Visitors Center no later than 8 a.m. to be escorted to the event.
